Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, the soldier dubbed ''Combat Barbie'' after being crowned Miss England, is joining fellow beauties to launch the Miss World 2009 Festival.

L/Cpl Hodge, who was drafted in to compete in the Miss World contest after Rachel Christie relinquished her title following her arrest over an alleged night club brawl, said she planned to join comrades on the frontline in Afghanistan.

The 22-year-old soldier has already served in Iraq but said she was hoping to join the effort in Afghanistan after stepping down as Miss England in July next year.

She said: ''It is something I want to do'', adding: ''People just do not appreciate the Army enough.''

L/Cpl Hodge said she thought of ''everybody involved'' after marking Remembrance Sunday with two minutes' silence alongside some of the 119 other contestants in gorgeous dresses vying to become Miss World.

She told how she hoped her role as an all-action beauty queen would be positive for young people who only saw digitally-enhanced models in beautiful dresses in the media.

L/Cpl Hodge, whose parents live in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, added: ''We are taught in training that we are first and foremost a soldier. When I am a soldier I have my hair scraped back and no make-up.

''I hope it bodes well that I am seen as a more natural internet models like beauty. Me having one day to get ready for this role shows that.''

She said her comrades were delighted for her, adding: ''They all love it and think it's fantastic.''

She added: ''It's been an absolute whirlwind - in 24 hours my life has changed.

''It's been weird but fantastic weird, because I really want this opportunity.''

L/Cpl Hodge added that she had been due to be sent out to Afghanistan before she was crowned Miss England.

She was previously given an award by her unit in the Royal Anglian Regiment for her actions during a posting in Basra and has earned the nickname ''Combat Barbie''.

She said she would be ready when called upon, adding: ''I am not leaving the army. I will still be going to work - I have just got promoted.''

She said she hoped her title as Miss England with other internet models would help raise funds for various military charities, including Help for Heroes.

L/Cpl Hodge, who was first runner-up in the 2009 national contest, was promoted after Miss Christie, 21, stepped down as she wanted to concentrate on clearing her name, a statement from Miss England organisers said.

L/Cpl Hodge was given five weeks' leave from her duties to represent England in the Miss World Final in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 12.

On Saturday she met up with contestants from the other countries ahead of a charity dinner in night club and auction in central London today to launch the Miss World 2009 Festival.

She has also previously worked with lingerie chain La Senza on its Face of the Armed Forces campaign.

Lisa Bond, marketing director of La Senza, said: ''Not only is she absolutely gorgeous but she is also an intelligent, inspiring young woman who does such an amazing job for her country.''

Miss Christie became involved in a dispute with another beauty queen, Miss Manchester, aka Sara Beverley Jones, at a Manchester nightclub last week.

Miss Jones, 24, was allegedly punched in the face after arguing about Tornado, a TV Gladiator who appears in the Sky1 series and whose real name is David McIntosh.

Clearly the photo-shoots on "America's Next Top Model" are for entertainment value more than the real modeling industry. We have seen the girls imitate their baby photo, pose like Drag Queens on a horse, bend their bodies like Cirque Du Soleil dancers, fly in the air like a Ninja hot model pose with metal and wrap scarves around their heads and bodies like mummies, among other weird things.

This week's episode started with the Short Model House being condemned by Tyra, who has wrapped red "Danger" tape all around the house and inside of it. The house is a disaster, a pig-sty and Tyra claims that Sundai's suitcase is an explosive clothing pile, which would make a good home for a rat. The girls are embarrassed, and web modeling Laura is anxious to start cleaning up but Tyra has other plans for them. She is declaring the girls can not live in the house anymore.

She directs them to the backyard, where Tyra slips out of her "condemning outfit" and is now flaunting herself in a bikini. As the girl huddle on the patio they take notice that the backyard has transformed into a tropical paradise. With ass-shaking girls in womens clothing grass skirts and half naked men flinging fire sticks, fruit galore and sand to play in, Tyra announces the girls better get packing because they are going to Hawaii, and they all squeal!

Sundai can't believe it, she has never been anywhere, she says. You know, except for Los Angeles for the show since she's from Las Vegas.

Next I hear Tyra's voice-over saying "welcome to Fierce Airlines," and I think, "Are you effin' kidding me?"

Off the plane and into their new pad, the girls are walking into a gazillion dollar home (or that is what it looks like), the grass is so green you want to cut it and add it to a salad and eat it, on the spot. Jennifer's beauty face CoverGirl commercial is playing in the living room, the bathroom, on another plasma near one of the six pools and waterfalls.

Tyra Mail has arrived. It reads: "If you want to catch a break, you're going to have to go get it."

Nicole ventures a guess that they'll be fishing. Nope it's surfing. A surfing photo challenge awaits.

I immediately think of the movie "Surf's Up," with the penguins, I love that movie.

The girls first have to learn how to ride a board, at Surf camp with surfing champ Buzzy Kerbox. Each little fishy has her try of falling on their face while trying to land a good balance on the surfboard. Their womens clothing outfits were really ugly and not flattering. It was not a Jessica Alba bikinis in "Into the Blue," it was more like little models on big surfboards trying not to drown, while wearing over-sized boyshorts.

Riding the board doesn't look easy; none of them ride the wave that well. I worry for a shark to bite their arm off or worse. Now imagine doing a hot model photo-shoot on a surfboard, while trying to keep your posture and poise and watch for sharks at the same time, because that's what happens next.

Don't worry the girls have professional surfer boys helping them catch the wave, and get their stance. The web modeling models just have to quickly get into a pose that looks pretty without falling off the board, as they glide.

Laura doesn't bend her knee enough and looks thick at the thighs. Later she gets very burnt from the sun and says she felt like a "piglet in a skillet."

Sundai couldn't get a good connection with the camera nor her pose and it results with a shot of her back to the camera.

Nicole looks sexy actually and poses with a nice arch to her back. Jennifer stretches her arm to keep her balance and looks Egyptian and I gave her three stars out of a five.

With the help of the surfer guys, Brittany gets her balance and lifts her arm toward her head creating a nice sensual pose, and Erin leaning back into the surfer dude also looks Sports Illustrated.

Erin wins this surf photo challenge. Her prize: A helicopter ride around the island. She gets to pick two friends and picks: Brittany and Nicole. Ironically beauty face Brittany had been previously shown talking smack about Erin and her immaturity. Maybe it was the editing but I wanted to tell Brittany to behave!

Erin is delighted to win something finally, but after the helicopter ride she mentions how she would have rather won something tangible like jewelry. Her voice is full of snot and all the girls notice her unappreciative manner.

Amanda Scott, director of women’s accessories at John Lewis, where sales of women’s brogues have doubled in the past month, says: “Once a fashion of ladies shoes trend like brogues starts to impact on sales at John Lewis, you know it’s infiltrated everywhere. This season’s mannish trend has not only affected sales of brogues, which have performed consistently well, but has also seen sales of small size men’s shirts and cardigans rise as women seek authentic ‘boyfriend’ outfits.”

Jean-Marc Gaucher, chief executive of Repetto, says: “Many young women who grew up wearing branded trainers are now after something just as comfortable, more grown-up, yet maintaining that tough sports/dance attitude.” The Parisian dance ladies shoes label is perhaps best known for its signature jazz shoe, which made the leap from the dance studio to the street in the shape of sturdy lace-up brogues. Every two months Repetto’s brogue collection (from £145) is updated with new colours and materials, and next August sees the opening of a stand-alone space in London’s Selfridges.

“With most shoes, you put them on and have to wear them in,” says Rebecca Lewison-White, manager of Black Truffle, an independent shoe store in London. “With the Repetto brogues, the minute you put them on they fit perfectly.”

Church’s, the historic British shoemakers bought by the Prada Group in 1999, has also been adding a new version of its classic Burwood brogue every season. In addition to classic black and tan versions, the current line (from £190) includes a tartan brogue that combines leather with woven Scottish fabric.

Tim Little, Grenson’s creative director, says: “Women who buy their shirts at Turnbull & Asser or their suits on Savile Row want the latest thing, something totally unique. Men have long known about this ‘investment’ factor and now, it seems, women are cottoning on to it too.”

Teaming up for a press op, Miranda Kerr and Behati Prinsloo were all smiles at the Victoria’s Secret Model Launch event at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles on Tuesday (March 10).

During the course of their afternoon outing, Miss Kerr launched the "Heavenly Bloom" fragrance while Miss Prinsloo posed with Victoria's Secret's first organic 100% vegan body care with some beauty tips from the PINK Body line.

Launched in February, PINK Body divides their beauty tips and products into four categories - energizing, nourishing, soothing and essentials, with all ingredients produces in the United States.

As the face of Australia's oldest fashion label, it's hard to deny Kristy Hinze has played a big hand in the recent evolution of Sportscraft.

At the ripe old age of 95 (that's Sportscraft, not Hinze), the label appears to be shaking off it's nanna tag and undergoing something of a sexy model style makeover. Stores are being revamped, a new online shop is on the way and the clothes are receiving a much-needed hip injection, again with the help of Hinze.

Case in point: the 2008 "Kristy" bag, a woven leather handbag co-designed and named after Hinze, which sold out in two days. This was followed by a capsule collection of luxury knitwear last winter, based on styles and shades favoured by the high-profile model/television presenter/billionaire's wife. Hitting stores next week is the latest sexy model Sportscraft-Kristy venture, a chic golf collection comprising mini-skirts, tailored shorts and polo T-shirts.

But before you assume Hinze's interest in golf comes courtesy of her 65-year-old husband, Jim Clark, the fact is it's the 29-year-old Queensland-born beauty who actually loves a round. Her first game was played against pro golfer Karrie Webb in a pro-am celebrity challenge on her native Gold Coast.

"For us, it's been fantastic having Kristy on board," says Sportscraft general manager Sonia Wong, who adds they weren't actually searching for an ambassador. "She really embraces the spirit of the brand – she's an optimistic Aussie with a hectic lifestyle who appreciates quality. We actually booked Kristy for our summer campaign and even beauty product modeling three years ago and when we met her, we immediately liked her. She was so professional and as soon as we saw her in the product, that just topped it off."

It's not the first time the brand has worked with high-profile models. Indeed, the company has quite a history of it, beginning with a campaign starring Maggie Tabberer in the 1960s. To commemorate this and their 95th birthday – celebration plans are already in place to mark the 100-year milestone – an ad beauty product campaign starring Hinze alongside past Sportscraft stars, including Nerida Piggin, Jenny Hayes, Tanya Tozzi and Michelle Eabry, appeared in Vogue Australia's recent 50th-anniversary issue.

"I already had pieces like the Sportscraft trench coat in my wardrobe, so it was great to come back to Australia after being away for a while and be associated with the brand, as it fits my lifestyle to a tee," Hinze tells essentialStyle. "It's the way I dress anyway, so it's a perfect fit. I'm casual and classic and that's always been the type of work I've done."

When it comes to Hinze, it seems to have been a case of serendipity. Not long after signing on to Sportscraft in 2007, Hinze landed the coveted role as host of the hit web modeling fashion series Project Runway, a gig that would make her a household name. Then, of course, came the column inches she generated for her relationship with a dotcom billionaire 35 years her senior.

"The brand and the customer base is evolving and there's no doubt Kristy's profile has helped," Wong says. "Kristy is also helping us understand the customer. We know that our customers are interested in golf and web modeling Kristy herself is passionate about it, so we collaborated together on something our customers enjoy."

Hinze's recent beach wedding in the Caribbean – for the record, Hinze was thrilled with her Oscar de la Renta dress and tells essentialStyle she felt like a princess – also provided inspiration for a new kaftan and resort collection, which is scheduled to hit stores in March.

"A few of us were fortunate enough to attend and some great ideas came from there," Wong says.

Enlisting a famous face to flog your wares and refresh brand perception appears to be a notion catching on, particularly among labels that have long been relegated to a kind of grandma no man's land. For Katies, the allure of small-screen veteran Georgie Parker, who was appointed brand ambassador earlier this year, appears to have paid off. When the actress appeared in her first campaign wearing a red trench coat, it literally walked out the door, according to a Katies spokesman.

Parker, who can now be seen spruiking the brand in television ads, print campaigns and catalogues, is a key component of Katies' strategy to target the younger 30- to 35-year-old market and to appear more fashion-savvy.

Also on a rebranding mission is Portmans. No longer content to play second fiddle to tough chain-store competition such as Sportsgirl and Witchery, Portmans is again turning to the pulling power of a famous face to reignite interest.

Having enlisted Miranda Kerr to star in campaigns during 2004-07 – before the supermodel signed on the dotted line at David Jones in 2008 – for the new spring-summer season Portmans has jumped on the popularity of Australia's Next Top Model news in many blogging sites employing runner-up Cassi Van Den Dungen as the face of a new campaign styled by the fashion director of Harper's Bazaar.

Also cashing in on the success of Top Model is Howard Showers, an iconic '80s label that has undergone an extreme makeover and appointed Charlotte Dawson as its launch ambassador.

"It has worked like a dream. As consumers, we all go to where we are most comfortable, so if you see a face you're familiar with, it makes a brand more approachable," says Danny Avidan, the chief executive of the Discovery Group, which owns the label.

And then there's Sarah. A pioneer in the battle of the brand ambassadors, Sarah Murdoch gave everyday undie brand Bonds the celebrity kiss of life when she signed on. She was also a great distraction during the brand's controversial decision as news on blogging to move manufacturing offshore – a decision Murdoch defended.

The task of making grandma's Cottontails desirable was never going to be easy but that's precisely what Murdoch did when she stripped down to her undies for print and television campaigns, prompting a surge in sales. "Sarah has been a wonderful ambassador for Bonds – our customers can really relate to Sarah as fashionable," the brand's marketing manager, Tanya Deans, says.

Away from the spotlight, former model Murdoch, like Hinze, also lends her expertise behind the scenes. "Sarah actively involves herself in product development and trial, which is valued as we evolve new Bonds styles like the Supershape bra," Deans says.

On Thursday night, a city nightclub held a pre-Independence Day bash by organising a colourful fashion show. The décor was in keeping with the theme of the celebrations as the interiors were decked up in colours of
orange, white and green.

Most guests showed their patriotism by painting their faces in the colours of the national flag. As the fashion show began inn famous night club models walked down in ethnic outfits that showed the diversity of the country.

As the DJ churned out some chartbusters, the crowd moved with fashion models to the beats. After a tiring stint on the floor, most were seen digging into cocktails and snacks with an Indian touch.

The closing of Irene Marie Models in February was a milestone moment in the steady decline of Miami's web modeling industry.

Other agencies have since scaled back, and the amount of money the industry has brought to the area has dwindled from about $40 million in 2002 to $12 million last year, reports the Canadian Press.

The economic recession is partially to blame, but so are stricter permit requirements in Miami Beach, increased airfare and luggage scrutiny the decline of night club magazines, dwindling ad budgets, and higher hotel prices.

Basically, at a time when clients have less money to spend, the cost of staging a photo shot on the Beach has climbed.

The direct economic impact is troubling, but moreover it could have a serious affect on the models and bottle culture in South Beach. The web modeling agencies rose at the same time South Beach turned into a flashy vacation mecca.

The allure of seeing some of the world's most beautiful woman at work was always part of the appeal for winter visitors, not to mention the chance of meeting one of the actors or the models out in a nightclub which still battle for their patronage.

If the models and their agencies keep dwindling, is Miami Beach in for a serious culture shock? I mean, who are they going to fill their VIP rooms with? actors or normal people? What is this, Fort Lauderdale?

A famous European model agency is looking for fresh faces. And now even Vladivostok city beauty face have a chance to get on covers of glossy magazines.

This project was first launched in Sweden and now fashion experts move towards the Russian Far East and suggest that “Fashion-Collection” – Vladivostok magazine are there model search should be the organizer of the Fashion Face project.

Greenloop also says she will appear in cover shots and editorials in several print and online magazines, gaining her exposure like actors in order to work with sustainable fashion houses, green product lines, and organic cosmetic companies.

Entries will be accepted through Sept 16. After a week of public online voting, 10 finalists will be invited to Portland, Oregon on Sept 25 to participate in a fashion shoot where many actors with actress will be presesnd and walk the runway during Portland Fashion Week as a final test before the winning model is announced.

The Marlins Mermaids strutted their stuff at the exclusive LIV Nightclub at Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Friday night as they debuted their 2009-2010 latest modeling calendar before a packed venue.

The Mermaids, which were recently named the second sexiest job in Miami by E! Entertainment's Sexiest Miami Jobs, modeled designs by LF Miami, Nikki's Beach night club House Boutique and Eva Danielle to the latest beats as a crowd of fans cheered them on. THE search is on for aspiring models to strut their stuff on the catwalk at Birmingham’s top fashion event.

Style Birmingham model portfolio Search is looking to recruit top new talent to take to the stage at the Style in the City event next month.

The fashion and beauty extravaganza comes to venues across the city from September 24-26.

Highlights include TV stylist Gok Wan offering live makeovers and fashion tips as part of his style sessions at the Bullring.

Sutton Coldfield-born TV personality Emma Willis will be taking on presenting duties at the catwalk shows model portfolio which will be held at a secret location inside the Mailbox.

The shows will herald a return to the catwalk for ITV2’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! Now presenter Emma the beauty face who graced the pages of Vogue and Marie Claire magazines before embarking on a TV career.

Kevin Breese, general manager at Harvey Nichols and chairman of Retail Birmingham’s marketing group, said: “We are really excited about Emma presenting this year’s catwalk show; not only is she a Birmingham girl but she’s also a great presenter.

“Coming from a fashion background means she will give the audience an insight into the fashion world.”

The 30-minute catwalk shows will feature work from some of the world’s top designers, including Stella McCartney, D&G and Roland Mouret. City retailers, including Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, Marks and Spencer and Selfridges, will be staging in-store events.Kevin added that the internet models search competition was a chance to show the world that Birmingham is home to some promising modelling talent.

Mr Breese said: “Our winning internet models will get to build their experience and portfolio at major events in the city’s style calendar, and have support and guidance from one of the UK’s top modelling agencies.”

The model search competition is open to the under-30s. The deadline for applications is August 31.

(i): So what’s your upcoming collection like?

WH: Well, yellow is this season’s color, so I pushed toward the metallics with gold and royal blue, color-wise. I use a lot of aquatic motifs, a lot of marine-themed shapes, designers and décor. It’s basically a bit like mermaid couture-wear. The men’s clothing is based on a marines and army theme. It’s a lot of structured suits.

My collection last year was a lot simpler; I’d just started, so it was a lot of draping with easy-to-work-with fabrics such as stretchy cotton. This year, I’m working on leathers, organza, tulle, pleated fabrics — I even wove some freshwater pearls and crystals into the dresses. So the dresses are heavy, and they have a lot of padding too, to create the rigid structure for the torso. It’s kind of like a really elaborate corset that’s young model made from a wash of fabrics.

(i): Where did you get your inspiration for the marine-theme from?

WH: I was inspired after visiting Kenting in Taiwan. I laid on the beach a lot there — the water is amazing. While sitting on the shore, I watched the waves come in, creating sea foams. So that’s the inspiration for the women’s collection. As for the men’s clothing — well, I hate making all young model collections. My cousins have been drafted into the Taiwanese army, so their army clothes inspired me. Royal blue is one of my favorite colors too.

(i): Once you’ve created and showcased your clothes, what’s the next step?

WH:For me personally, most of what I make is just highly couture, which is un-wearable in everyday life. As for the other beauty professionals, that depends; if they’re just donating, then 100 percent of the profits from the sale goes to Doctors Without Borders. If designers are selling through us, then 10 percent of the profits go to Doctors Without Borders.

So yes, designers have the option of donating or selling. Some of the designers that will be selling are Nanette Lepore, Tibi, BCBG, Oscar de la Renta and others. The sale is geared toward students, so the price will range from $20 to $200 depending on what the piece of clothing is. The beauty professionals tell us what they want. But the prices will be below retail.

(i): The fashion industry has by no means been immune from the economic downturn. In fact, just recently the Italian government bailed out many of the top Italian model photography houses, including Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. How do you think fashion will evolve through the recession?

WH: In my opinion, there are two ways the fashion industry will respond to the economic crisis: the first route is some will go with the flow, go with the economic times and tone down everything so the clothes are more realistic and fashion is simpler. New York Fashion Week: designers stay in tune with the times

The invitation wasn't in the post. When it was first rumoured that Marc Jacobs would be slashing the guest list for his New York show, on Monday, tremors were felt throughout the fashion pack. Who, as the Americans put it, was going to "make the cut"?

But the bigger question was, why the cut? Surely a designer whose eponymous line is majority-owned by the luxury giant LVMH, and who is also at the creative helm of Louis Vuitton, could not be feeling the pinch? (The fact that there was a small, white Porsche in the window of the downtown Marc by Marc Jacobs store with a sign reading "Car for sale, make best offer" had been viewed as an ironic comment on the downturn, not a sign of desperation.)

While inviting 500 seated guests instead of the usual crowd of 2,000 did make for a saving at the most basic level – they needed fewer chairs – it turned out the real reason was to be in tune with the times. As Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs International, told the trade paper, Women's Wear Daily, "This isn't the time to spend the money to entertain the entire world."

"It definitely feels like it is not the moment for a scene," says Kate Betts, the editor of Time magazine's Style & Design special issues. "But the biggest shock of the New York shows has been seeing editors-in-chief coming out of shows and, instead of phoning their drivers, hailing cabs. I've never seen that before."

Others simply stayed home, including Rebecca Lowthorpe, Elle UK's fashion features director. "I usually do New York, but our budgets have been cut. Every magazine I know of that would usually send two, maybe three people, sent one or none at all."

So does she think the shows are shrinking? "Designers will have known at least a month ago who would be attending and may have booked smaller venues accordingly," she says. Indeed, menswear designer John Bartlett showed in his apartment.

A smaller show should not, however, necessarily be taken as a sign of crisis. As far back as March 1997, Helmut Lang, then the designer of the moment, cut his invitation list to just 130 to make it super-exclusive. Nicolas Ghesquière of Balenciaga has followed suit ever since and manages to maintain his über-cool reputation partly because he invites so few guests, thereby providing each of them with Paris Fashion Week's most withering put-down: "Oh, I didn't see you at Balenciaga this morning."

Missing from this season's New York schedule was Suno, a new label gathering heat because it ticks all the boxes – the clothes are hip (designed in Manhattan), eco-friendly (fabrics are vintage kanga cloths from Kenya) and ethical (the label was set up to create employment among Nairobi's poor).

"I guess a label like ours would have launched with a show in the past," muses Suno's creator, Max Osterweis, "but that just didn't seem the best use of resources when we could be creative with a look book and the internet to capture the spirit of what we are trying to achieve."

Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham, another still-new name when it comes to the New York fashion schedule (it's her second season), kept things small. Her sleek and vividly bright collection, all laser-cut to skim over curves and unveiled to a chosen few in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria, appeared bang-on trend both in silhouette and presentation.

Former catwalk queen Alice Temperley has opted for a multimedia installation this season, a change unlikely to be a cost-cutting measure given that Temperley London is now a partnership with Mohammed Alabbar, chairman of the Emaar group of Dubai.

Instead, the designer says that, having long wanted to move on from the frenzy and the deep environmental impact of a fashion show, huge leaps in technology now allow her to do that.

"It is crazy that a creative industry has not changed [from the big-show] format for the past 20 years," she says. "We thought carefully about what was needed in order to allow the collection to reach its intended audience and came up with the concept of the global installation that can be screened into millions of homes via the internet." A touring collection of the garments is also being shown in New York, London and Paris.

Fashion internet pioneer Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-a-porter, agrees that counting bums on seats on the night has become "very 20th-century," and points out that more than two million viewers a month now log on to her site to view fashion shows.

"Just because the way we see fashion is changing doesn't mean the appetite for fashion is declining," she counsels, adding that the old model of one big show in the spring, another big one in the autumn and a four-to-six month time-lag before delivery has ceased to make sense.

As she explains: "Moving away from the habit and reliance of big shows will allow the creative talents to do more frequent collections with fewer items and be in step with the consumer."

That said, Massenet will be attending London Fashion Week as usual. Hilary Riva, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, believes London's perpetual creativity and its record of having nurtured so many of today's global players (John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, to name a few) will prove its trump card in a tough season.

"We Brits are especially good with our backs to the wall," says Riva who, while admitting fewer foreign buyers are expected, adds that London's reputation for unbridled creativity means that the visiting media numbers are actually up.

Not one designer has deserted the big LFW tent. But then why would they, when the BFC has worked hard to establish the long-term sponsorship and support systems that make showing in London less than a third of the cost of New York?

But what of Paris, home to the most lavish extravaganzas? Last season, Karl Lagerfeld had a life-size version of the House of Chanel constructed at the head of a catwalk within the Grand Palais and 3,500 people watched models strut to the sound of Our House by Madness.

Let's not panic until we hear that, owing to la crise, the Chanel show has relocated to Karl's house, with burly security guards to turn away all those loyalists in tweed with a "desolée Madame, mais les places sont très limitées cette saison".

If you have any skin or hair problems, get rid of them beforehand, preferably consulting beauty specialists. Make sure your body stays fit and well groomed.

If you are overweight or experience any other problems, attend a swimming pool or a fitness-center. Try to get a closer look at modeling photography world. Flip through magazines, watch fashion show reports, etc. Try to talk to established models if you can, but remember that their opinions are purely personal and are not necessarily correct.

Determine how much time you can devote to modeling, if you must attend to other activities (study, job, etc). Determine if you are willing to relocate to another city or country for a period of time.

Relationship with Your Agency

- Modeling casting agencies are divided into two categories depending on specialization of models that they represent:

- full-service, representing models of various specifications;

- Specialized agencies, representing models of a certain specializations (plus-size, body-part, etc).

- Agencies can also be divided into those who hold their own model database and those who are purely mediators.

- When signing up with the agency, make sure you discuss every aspect of your relationship and the types of jobs that you agree to perform.

- Always maintain constant connection with your agency. Keep your agency informed of all the changes in your life (relocations, family status, vacations out of town, etc).

- If you plan a visit to your agency, please call to agree on the best suitable time.

- If you plan to change your looks, consulting your agency is mandatory.

- Always maintain good ethics in your behavior and opinions when communicating with other models and agency representatives.

Casting and Jobs

- Clothes you wear to casting shouldn’t be bright, multicolored or branded

- The same concerns bikini castings. You should wear a two-piece, monochrome bikini.

- Make sure your body is well-groomed, your hair clean, it is advisable to have your nails painted with colorless nail-polish, when attending a casting.

- You should visit cosmetologist 3 or 4 days before the casting. Your skin may not have enough time to adapt.

- If this is your first casting don’t walk in first and try not to show up last, watch other television models and see how they act.

- Try to join models whose height matches yours.

Meryl Streep Rules Again at the "Doubt" Premiere

New York – She has been in our cinematic life seemingly forever, with 14 Academy Award nominations and two wins, and at 59 years old is ancient by Hollywood standards for female stars. At that age, she is supposed to go quietly out to pasture and let the teenagers take over.

But this is Meryl Streep, and when she appears on screen in "Doubt," as the tight-laced, authoritarian nun and school Principal Sister Aloysius Beauvier in John Patrick Shanley's cinematic adaptation of his Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play, she once again proves that there is no one else like her. Another Oscar nomination seems inevitable, so it is no wonder that Streep was all smiles at the New York premiere of the film Sunday, Dec. 7.

She, along with her co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis, joined Shanley and friends Stanley Tucci, Edie Falco, Marlo Thomas, Phil Donohue, Tovah Feldshuh, and Nikki Blonsky in using the premiere to celebrate their first award of the season, that of Best Ensemble TV models Acting given by the National Board of Review last week.

In an earlier conversation in support of the film, Streep deflected the focus on her amazing performance and insisted that "Doubt" is just that, a group effort, rather than a showcase for her model photography prodigious talents.

"I'm very gratified that people are responding to it," she said. "But I feel like it's the whole thing in this one. It's the whole thing. There's not one area of fat or indulgence or show off-y directorial flair. It's just what the story needs. That's all it is. It's because it's so tight and it just tightens as it goes. It's beautifully plotted. I am the recipient of praise for something that John conceived. We're all as good as that script is."

Nice of her to include her co-stars and the writer-director in that assessment, and there is certainly a chance that all four principal actors in the searing drama may just get Academy Award nominations for their performances, as well as Shanley for his efforts, but when it comes to predicting Oscar 2009, as much as she protests, Meryl Streep in "Doubt" seems an absolute lock.

Bravo's new fashion show looking for designer competitors

Bravo may lose “Project Runway,” but it still has style and look more beautiful for glamour models.

The cable network has ordered “The Fashion Show,” a design-competition series in which viewers pick the winner, it announced Thursday. Bravo did not say when the series would debut, but did announce nationwide casting calls, including in Chicago on Nov. 13.

Interested designers can attend the casting call from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Crobar, 1543 N. Kingsbury. There are eligibility requirements—and some homework—to be completed before the auditions, so visit bravotv.com/Casting for more information and really model needed.

Bravo Media executive Frances Berwick said in a statement that “The Fashion Show” is “the perfect complement to our successful fashion series ‘Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style’ and ‘The Rachel Zoe Project.’”

He did not mention “Runway,” which is currently at the center of a court battle over whether “Runway” producers the Weinstein Co. are legally allowed to take the show from Bravo to Lifetime.

Bravo announced another fashion-oriented series Thursday called “Celebrity Sew-Off,” in which celebs show off their design skills.

NOM*D & Cybèle win Air NZ Fashion Export Awards

The venue is packed away, designers have returned to work, and the dust has settled on Air New Zealand Fashion Week 2008. So we’re pleased to bring you a retrospective look at some of the highlights and excitement that made up the big week!

Taking New Zealand fashion to the world
Acclaimed New Zealand fashion labels NOM*D and Cybèle have taken home the country's ultimate fashion business prizes of the 2008 Air New Zealand Fashion Export Awards. Margi Robertson's Dunedin-based label NOM*D, which already exports to Australia, Europe, the US and Asia, won the Growth category. The Development award was won by Auckland designer Cybèle Wiren.

Her label Cybèle commenced exporting in 2005 and is now sold in Australia, Japan and Dubai.

Established in 2004, the annual awards provide two New Zealand designers with a significant travel prize so that they can grow their export business and help take New Zealand fashion to the world.

Working it
International fashion experts came together at the Westpac Workroom brunch event during Fashion Week to discuss a number of topics relating to the business of fashion. A survey had been conducted prior to the event which was answered by a wide range of the fashion industry to see what keeps the industry awake at night.

The panel discussed the survey results and talked about the production and selling of New Zealand fashion modeling and the important issue of cash-flow within a fashion business.

The panel included Westpac Business Manager Ray Searle; Bryan Eible, owner of Foxy Lady boutiques in Florida; Patty Huntington, fashion journalist at Womenswear Daily Australia and writer of Frockwriter blog; Brian Long, Miami PR agency owner; and Pieter Stewart, Director and Founder of Air New Zealand Fashion Week.

VIPs - up close and personal
Every year a team of minders take on the big challenge of hosting our international media and buyers on site through the week. A day in the life of a minder is no easy task, it can involve taking their ‘bestie’ for breakfast, to press interviews, making sure they reach the all important fashion shows, booking transport, site seeing around Auckland, and don’t forget the after parties! One of our most experienced minders is Jackie Strang who has been a VIP Media minder for 4 years now. Each year Strang is in charge of hosting international media or celebrities and this year Jackie was responsible for taking care of International Supermodel Roshumba Williams. “Roshumba wanted to do it all! Through the week I hosted her to bars, restaurants, around Auckland, introduced her to celebrities, VIPs and All Blacks. I helped her to source two outfits a day from New Zealand designers, and I even helped her choose which outfits to wear each day. To do a good job you need to know information about the designers and the ins and outs of the fashion industry. It’s a demanding yet satisfying job and I look forward to it each year,” says Strang.

Behind the scenes
Each year coordinating volunteers on site becomes a full time job for someone during the month leading into and during Air New Zealand Fashion Week 2008. This year Nicky Gadsdon stepped into the role of organizing more than 200 backstage dressers, ushers, drivers and support people. Nicky described her typical Fashion Week day.

“I correspond with at least 30 volunteers a shift and at least two shifts per day. The volunteers work tirelessly on their feet and play an all important part in keeping Fashion Week running. Many of the volunteers come from all over New Zealand and some of them have taken leave from work so they can experience Fashion Week first hand! When casting volunteers we look for passion, enthusiasm and availability.”

Shoot 'em up
Congratulations to Sacha Stejko of Whitecliffe who is this year’s winner of the Sony Photography Competition - see right for an example of her strikingly beautiful shots. Talented runners-up included Yoon Tae Kim and Isaac Lee, also of Whitecliffe.

“Sony is proud to support the competition because it has proven to be a valuable stepping stone for photographers wanting to break into the professional realm of fashion photography. Submissions were of an exceptionally high standard this year, however Sacha Stejko’s photos really stood out to the judges."

"Last year’s winner Jessica Sim has returned to Air New Zealand Fashion Week this year to assist the event’s official photographer Michael Ng, and Guy Coombes who was placed third in the competition last year, was onsite equipped with a Sony a900 taking snaps for Runway Reporter.” says Sam Williams, Product Manager – Digital Imaging for Sony.

Fashion shows to be cut short on Karva Chauth

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) The late night schedules of two major fashion events this month have been cut short thanks to Karva Chauth - when Hindu wives fast all day for the wellbeing of their husbands - falling right in the middle of the two big shows - the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) and the Delhi Fashion Week (DFW).

While DFW will run Oct 14-18, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI)-organised WIFW will run Oct 15-19. Karva Chauth falls on Oct 17.

'There are some festivals for which we don't know the date in advance and Karva Chauth is one of them. The dates for fashion week were already decided. When we came to know Karva Chauth is falling in between our dates, we adjusted the time and shows,' FDCI President Sunil Sethi told IANS.

In fact, designer Payal Jain's WIFW show was scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Oct 17 but has now been rescheduled for the next day.

On all the other days of both fashion weeks, barring Karva Chauth, the last show of each day had been scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.

Now, on Oct 17, WIFW will hold its last show at 6 p.m. and at DFW, the last show is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Tips for Creating a Modeling Portfolio

• If you are trying to get your portfolio done with the sole aim of getting signed to an agency, think twice. The majority of agencies will ask you to do a portfolio shoot upon signing anyway, so this could very well mean paying twice!

• In the first instance, it may be worthwhile approaching agencies with snapshot headshots and bodyshots. If this gets you nowhere, then consider paying a professional.

• When you are getting dressed, make sure all your clothes are on properly - as in no twisted straps, no buttons done up through the wrong holes...

• Remember - your teen modeling portfolio is not a photo album! If a photo doesn't "sell" you, don't keep it because you have develop sentimental value towards it.

• Ideally, you should aim to have photos no older than a year in your portfolio. This may mean having to get your modeling portfolio re-shot again, so be prepared!

• It's a good idea to keep spare copies of the photos in your portfolio in a safe place. You'll avoid major panics if you should lose your modeling portfolio if you do this.

• Unless you are amazingly good fashion model at applying your own make-up, hire a make-up artist for the shoot. It is an additional expense but you don't want to shell out on expensive photos only to have them ruined by poor make-up.

• Don't assume that the photographer charging you the most must therefore be the best. On the other hand, also remember that you get what you pay for. Strike a balance!!

• Practicing modeling may feel weird at first but it is a must! What you think looks good in your head may not work out in real life...and you want to know that before you head to the photoshoot!

• Be aware of tanning before the shoot as tan lines can create problems.

• Be aware that many photographers and make-up artists will have cancellation policies for bikini modeling. As a rule of thumb, if you cancel within 48 hours of the starting time of the shoot, you will have to pay at least some, usually all, of the fee.
